Marginal Rate Quirks
- Scotland 60% marginal trap (£100k-£125,140): Personal Allowance taper + 45% Advanced rate = effective 67.5% marginal rate vs rUK 60%.
- «Spike» at £43,663 in Scotland: Jump from 21% to 42% — a 21-point cliff (rUK jumps 20% to 40% at £50,270).
- Salary sacrifice especially valuable in Scotland for those in the 42-48% bands — bigger tax saving per £ sacrificed.
- Pension contributions get tax relief at Scottish marginal rate via salary sacrifice. With Relief at Source, HMRC adds 20% then claim back the extra via Self Assessment.
Who Counts as a Scottish Taxpayer?
HMRC applies the Scottish rate based on where you LIVE, not work. Your main residence must be in Scotland for the majority of the tax year. Your tax code starts with «S» (e.g. S1257L). Move house — update HMRC promptly to avoid wrong band. Same Income Tax rules apply to all UK savings, dividend and pension income for Scottish taxpayers, but ironically dividend and savings tax remain UK-wide (Holyrood hasn\'t devolved those).
