UK driving costs are dominated by four taxes plus fuel: Vehicle Excise Duty (VED), Fuel Duty, Insurance Premium Tax, and the new Expensive Car Supplement. Major change from April 2025: electric vehicles now pay VED for the first time (£10 first year, £195 standard from year 2). The £40,000 list-price threshold for the Expensive Car Supplement (£425/yr for years 2-6) now also catches EVs. Domestic charging an EV at ~7p/kWh during off-peak hours can deliver "fuel cost" equivalent to under £0.05/mile — versus £0.13-£0.18/mile for an equivalent petrol car. Salary sacrifice on company-provided EVs benefits from a 3% Benefit-in-Kind rate (2025/26), rising 1pp annually. Beyond the vehicle: ULEZ in London charges £12.50/day for non-compliant cars, with similar Clean Air Zones in Birmingham, Bristol, Sheffield, Bath, Newcastle, Portsmouth, Tyneside, and others. Average UK car running cost is ~£3,500-£5,000/year. Voluntary Termination under the Consumer Credit Act 1974 lets HP/PCP holders hand back the car once 50% of total amount payable has been paid — useful escape clause not available on PCH lease.
