VAT (Value Added Tax) is the UK's consumption tax, charged at 20% standard rate, 5% reduced rate or 0% zero rate depending on the goods or service. Our VAT calculators cover the everyday arithmetic of adding or removing VAT from a price, working out what you owe HMRC under the Flat Rate Scheme by trade sector, and understanding invoice totals under the construction industry's domestic reverse charge. All tools use the £90,000 VAT registration threshold (April 2024) and the latest published HMRC rates.
Last verified: April 2025 against HMRC, Ofgem and gov.uk sources for the 2026/27 tax year.
Every tool below is free, requires no sign-up and uses 2026/27 UK rates.

Check whether you need to register
You must register for VAT once taxable turnover exceeds £90,000 in any rolling 12 months, or you expect it to in the next 30 days. Below that, registration is optional.
Add or remove VAT correctly
To add 20% VAT, multiply by 1.2. To remove it from a gross figure, divide by 1.2. Use 1.05 for the 5% reduced rate. Our VAT calculator does this instantly.
Consider the Flat Rate Scheme if turnover is under £150,000
FRS lets you pay a single sector percentage instead of reconciling input and output VAT — often favourable for low-cost service businesses, less so for those with high reclaimable purchases.
Check if the construction reverse charge applies
If you supply construction services to another VAT- and CIS-registered business that is not an end user, you must invoice net of VAT under the domestic reverse charge, not charge it as normal.
Keep MTD-compatible digital records
Making Tax Digital for VAT applies to every VAT-registered business — keep digital records and file returns through compatible software, usually quarterly.
