Calculate your Body Mass Index (BMI) using the NHS BMI classification.
Choose units
Pick metric (kg and cm) or imperial (stones, pounds and feet/inches). The calculator works identically either way and shows results in both formats.
Enter weight and height
Type your current weight and height. For accuracy, use morning weight without clothes after using the bathroom, and measure height standing barefoot against a wall.
Select ethnicity (optional)
NICE recommends lower thresholds for South Asian, Chinese, Black and Middle Eastern adults (overweight 23+, obese 27.5+). The calculator applies these automatically if selected.
Read your BMI and category
See your BMI score, the NHS category (underweight, healthy, overweight, obese), and the kg distance to the nearest healthy threshold. Useful for setting a realistic target.
Combine with waist measurement
For best risk insight, also measure waist circumference at the belly button. Over 94cm (men) or 80cm (women) indicates raised risk even within a "healthy" BMI band.
How BMI is calculated, what the NHS uses it for, where it fails (athletes, older adults, ethnic differences) and what the new 'BMI prime' and waist-to-height ratios add. A plain-English UK guide.
