Rates from 7 April 2025: eldest/only child £26.05/week (up from £25.60); each additional child £17.25/week (up from £16.95). Payment cycle: every four weeks into a UK bank account; weekly payment available for single parents or those getting certain benefits. Eligibility: you live in the UK and are responsible for a child under 16, or under 20 if in approved education/training. Even non-claimants should fill in the form (and tick ‘do not pay’) to receive NI credits towards State Pension if a parent is not working or earning enough for credits — vital for one-earner households. High Income Child Benefit Charge: if either partner’s adjusted net income exceeds £60,000 the charge claws back 1% of Child Benefit per £200 over the threshold; fully eliminated at £80,000. Charge is paid by the higher earner through self-assessment, regardless of who receives the payment. Salary-sacrificing into pension below £60,000 is a common strategy to preserve full benefit.
