How does the council tax single person discount work?
If you are the only adult living in your home, you are entitled to a 25% discount on your council tax bill, regardless of your income or the value of your property. You must apply to your local council, and the discount continues automatically each year unless your household circumstances change.
Full answer
Council Tax bills are normally calculated assuming two or more adults live in a property, so a single adult occupier is entitled to a 25% discount off the full bill for their council tax band, applied automatically once claimed and confirmed with the local authority. To qualify, you must be the only person aged 18 or over living in the property as your main home -- some people are "disregarded" for council tax purposes even if they technically live there, such as full-time students, certain live-in carers, people in prison, and people who are severely mentally impaired, meaning a household with one liable adult plus one or more disregarded people can still qualify for the 25% single person discount. If every adult in a household is disregarded (for example, a property occupied only by full-time students), the property may qualify for a full council tax exemption rather than just a discount. To apply, contact your local council directly -- most offer an online form -- providing your name, address and confirmation that you are the sole qualifying adult resident; some councils carry out periodic reviews or data-matching checks (for example against the electoral roll or credit reference data) to confirm continued eligibility, and it is your responsibility to inform the council promptly if your circumstances change, such as a partner moving in or an adult child returning home, since failing to do so can result in a backdated bill and potentially a penalty for incorrectly claiming the discount.
