Do I get a discount on council tax if I live alone?
Yes. If you are the only adult living in a property, you qualify for a 25% single person discount on your council tax bill.
Full answer
Council tax assumes at least two adults live in a property. If you are the only adult resident, you are entitled to a 25% single person discount regardless of your income or the value of the property. You must apply for this discount through your local council as it is not applied automatically. Certain people are disregarded for council tax purposes including full-time students, apprentices, and people with severe mental impairment. If all residents in a property are disregarded, the bill may be reduced by 50% or even nil. Some councils also offer additional discounts for low-income households on top of the single person discount.
