How do I claim a tax refund from HMRC?
Check your tax code at gov.uk via your Personal Tax Account. If you have overpaid, HMRC usually refunds automatically via P800 or Simple Assessment after the tax year ends. You can also claim back up to 4 previous tax years (currently as far as 2021/22).
Full answer
If you have overpaid Income Tax in the UK, refunds come via several routes. End-of-year reconciliation: HMRC issues a P800 letter or Simple Assessment after the tax year, usually between July and November. You can claim online, by bank transfer or cheque. Work expenses: claim flat-rate or itemised work expenses (uniform, professional fees, mileage) via gov.uk/tax-relief-for-employees. Marriage Allowance: claim up to 4 years backdating (~Β£1,000 potential refund). Tax code wrong: if your tax code is incorrect β contact HMRC. Refunds adjust through your tax code or by direct payment. Self Assessment: if you file SA, any overpayment is repaid after submission. Time limit: 4 years from the end of the tax year you overpaid. Beware refund scams: HMRC never asks for refund details by SMS, email or social media. Use gov.uk only.
