Where can I find my UK tax code?
Your tax code is on every payslip (look for "Tax Code"), your P60 (issued by 31 May after tax year end), your P45 (when leaving a job), and via gov.uk/personal-tax-account. Pensioners also see it on their pension statement.
Full answer
Five places to find your UK tax code. (1) Payslip β every payslip must show your tax code. Look for "Tax Code" or "TC" with a value like 1257L. (2) P60 β end-of-year summary, issued by 31 May after the tax year ends; shows tax code on the date of the P60. (3) P45 β leaving certificate, issued when you stop working for an employer; shows tax code at leaving date. (4) Personal Tax Account β sign in at gov.uk/personal-tax-account; shows current code and history. (5) Pension statements β if you receive a pension, the provider must show your tax code on payment notifications. Common codes 2025/26: 1257L (standard), 1257L W1/M1/X (emergency), BR (basic rate), 0T (no allowance), K-prefix (negative allowance), S-prefix (Scottish), C-prefix (Welsh). If your code looks wrong, contact HMRC on 0300 200 3300 or use the online "Tell HMRC about a change" tool in your Personal Tax Account.
