Full answer
Council tax for 2026/27 depends on your property’s valuation band and the rates set by your local council, so there is no single national figure. In England the average Band D bill is around £2,280 a year, but it ranges widely between authorities. Properties are placed in bands A to H (England and Scotland) or A to I (Wales) based on their value at a fixed valuation date. Band D is the reference point; Band A is two-thirds of Band D, while Band H is twice Band D. Worked example: if your council sets Band D at £2,100, a Band A home pays 6/9 × £2,100 = £1,400, and a Band H home pays 18/9 × £2,100 = £4,200. Discounts apply: a single adult occupier gets 25% off, and full-time students are exempt. Scotland uses different band multipliers and has its own rates set by each council, while Wales revalued more recently and has the extra Band I. Annual increases are typically capped (around 5% in England without a referendum). Check your band and your council’s rate on your bill.
