How much is my Plan 1 student loan repayment on a £28,000 salary?
On a £28,000 salary in 2026/27, a Plan 1 student loan repayment is £99 for the year (9% of the £1,100 above the £26,900 threshold), leaving take-home pay of £23,580.60 a year after Income Tax, National Insurance and the loan repayment -- about £1,965.05 a month.
Full answer
Plan 1 student loans, used by most English and Welsh undergraduates who started their course before September 2012, plus most Northern Ireland and pre-2021 Scottish students, are repaid at 9% of income above a 2026/27 threshold of £26,900. On a £28,000 salary, the amount above the threshold is £1,100, so the annual repayment is 9% of £1,100, which is £99, or £8.25 a month, deducted automatically through PAYE alongside Income Tax and National Insurance. The underlying Income Tax on £28,000 is £3,086 (20% of the £15,430 taxable after the £12,570 Personal Allowance) and National Insurance is £1,234.40 (8% of the same £15,430), so total deductions are £4,419.40, leaving take-home pay of £23,580.60 a year, around £1,965.05 a month. Because Plan 1 is the oldest of the main repayment plans, many borrowers on it are close to the 25-year automatic write-off point, after which any remaining balance is cancelled regardless of how much has been repaid.
