How do I check my tax code UK?
Check your tax code on your latest payslip, your P45 or P60, your HMRC online personal tax account, or the HMRC app. The standard code for 2025/26 is 1257L, meaning a £12,570 Personal Allowance. Different letters and numbers signal adjustments — always check that it reflects your current circumstances.
Full answer
Easiest source: your most recent payslip lists the code your employer is using. Cross-check it against HMRC by signing into the personal tax account at gov.uk/personal-tax-account or the HMRC mobile app — both show the live code, how it was calculated, and any deductions applied (such as company car BIK or untaxed interest). The number is your tax-free allowance ÷ 10. Letters: L (standard PA), M (received Marriage Allowance), N (gave Marriage Allowance), K (negative allowance, deductions exceed PA), BR (basic-rate all), D0 (higher-rate all), D1 (additional-rate all), 0T (no allowance), NT (no tax), S prefix (Scottish), C prefix (Welsh). Common reasons to challenge it: lingering benefit-in-kind from an old job, incorrect estimated rental income, unreported pension contributions claiming higher-rate relief. To change it: use the HMRC app to update employment, company benefits, or expenses; call 0300 200 3300; or write giving your NI number, employer PAYE reference and the change. Overpayments are refunded via payroll once the code updates, or in a P800 after year-end.
