How do I get a UK National Insurance number?
Apply online at gov.uk/apply-national-insurance-number. Free, takes 2-4 weeks. You can start work without an NI number using your passport for right-to-work check — give the number to employer once received. Required for paying NI and qualifying for State Pension.
Full answer
A UK National Insurance number is a unique identifier (format: 2 letters + 6 digits + 1 letter, e.g. QQ123456C) issued by HMRC/DWP. UK residents get one automatically before turning 16. New arrivals from abroad: apply at gov.uk/apply-national-insurance-number after arriving in UK. You'll need your BRP (Biometric Residence Permit) or passport + visa, proof of address (utility bill, tenancy agreement), and a UK phone number. Online application takes 15 minutes; receive number by post 2-4 weeks later. Can start work before receiving — employer uses passport for right-to-work check. NI number is needed for: paying NI, qualifying State Pension, claiming benefits, accessing Personal Tax Account.
