What is the take-home pay for a newly qualified (NQ) solicitor in the UK?
Newly qualified solicitor salaries range from around £30,000-£40,000 at regional and smaller firms up to £150,000+ at top London City firms. On a representative NQ salary of £50,000 in 2026/27, take-home pay after Income Tax (£7,486) and National Insurance (£2,994) is £39,520 a year, or about £3,293.33 a month.
Full answer
Newly qualified (NQ) solicitor pay varies enormously by firm type and location: regional high-street firms often pay £30,000-£40,000, mid-size national firms £45,000-£65,000, and Magic Circle or top US-headquartered City firms £125,000-£180,000 or more for NQ associates. Taking a representative mid-market NQ salary of £50,000 for 2026/27: Personal Allowance £12,570 (0%), remaining £37,430 taxed at 20% basic rate = £7,486 Income Tax. National Insurance is 8% on earnings between £12,570 and £50,270 = £2,994. Total deductions £10,480, leaving £39,520 net take-home a year, or roughly £3,293.33 a month. At the top end, an NQ on £150,000 would pay significantly more proportionally: the £50,271-£125,140 band at 40% plus 45% above £125,140, alongside the Personal Allowance taper starting at £100,000, pushing the effective marginal rate to 60% on the slice between £100,000 and £125,140. Many City firms also pay a discretionary bonus on top of base salary, taxed as ordinary employment income through PAYE in the month received. Student loan repayments (commonly Plan 2 or Plan 5, given typical qualification ages) add a further 9% above the relevant repayment threshold.
