Full answer
UK student loan repayments depend on your plan, which is determined by when and where you started studying. Plan 1 (England/Wales pre-2012, NI any time): threshold £26,065, repay 9% above. Plan 2 (England/Wales 2012–July 2023): threshold £28,470, 9%. Plan 4 (Scotland): £32,745, 9%. Plan 5 (England, courses starting August 2023+): £25,000, 9%. Postgraduate Loan: £21,000, 6% (charged in addition to any undergraduate loan). Repayments are deducted automatically through PAYE if you are an employee, or via Self Assessment if you are self-employed. Plan 5 loans are written off after 40 years (others vary: Plan 2 after 30 years, Plan 1 typically at age 65). Voluntary overpayments are allowed but rarely cost-effective for Plan 2/5 because of the long write-off period and high interest.
