Voluntary Class 3 NI cost UK?
Class 3 voluntary NI costs £17.45 per week for 2024/25 — £907.40 to buy a full year of NI credits. Each full year added typically increases the new State Pension by £6.32 per week (£328.64 per year), so payback is reached in under three years of retirement.
Full answer
Class 3 contributions fill gaps in your NI record — useful if you have missing years from time abroad, low earnings, career breaks, or carer years before NI credits existed. You usually need 35 qualifying years for the full new State Pension (£230.30/week in 2025/26) and at least 10 years for any State Pension. Cost: £17.45/week (2024/25 rate) × 52 = £907.40 per missing year; the rate is reviewed annually. Each year bought adds about 1/35 of the full pension — currently around £6.32/week or £328.64/year. Break-even sits at roughly 2.8 years of retirement. Eligibility windows: ordinarily you can pay for the previous 6 tax years, but a temporary extension lets you fill gaps back to 6 April 2006 if you act before 5 April 2025. Always call the Future Pension Centre (0800 731 0175) before paying — only top up years that will actually increase your forecast, because already-fully-qualifying records gain nothing.
