The benefit cap limits the total amount of welfare benefits a household can receive. For 2026/27, the weekly cap is: couples and families with children outside London — £442.31; couples and families with children in London — £525.98; single adults without children outside London — £296.35; single adults without children in London — £352.87. The cap was uprated in April 2026. Certain benefits are exempt from the cap including Disability Living Allowance (DLA), Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Employment and Support Allowance (support group), Attendance Allowance, Carer's Allowance, and Working Tax Credit. Households where someone is working and eligible for Working Tax Credit are also usually exempt. The cap is applied by reducing Housing Benefit or Universal Credit housing costs.
