Is buildings or contents insurance required by law in the UK?
Buildings insurance is not legally required, but mortgage lenders require it as a condition of the mortgage. Contents insurance is entirely optional.
Full answer
UK law does not require buildings or contents insurance. However, almost all mortgage lenders require you to hold buildings insurance from exchange of contracts, as the property is their security. Leasehold flat owners are typically covered by the freeholder's block policy (paid via service charge). Contents insurance is purely optional -- no one can compel you to have it. Lenders cannot insist you use their own insurer; you must be free to shop around. Buy-to-let landlords need specialist landlord insurance.
