From April 2026, the National Living Wage (NLW) for workers aged 21 and over is £12.71 per hour, an increase from £12.21 in 2025/26. The National Minimum Wage rates are: £10.00 per hour for 18-20 year olds, and £7.55 per hour for 16-17 year olds and apprentices in their first year of an apprenticeship (or aged under 19). These rates are set annually by the Low Pay Commission (LPC) and come into effect from 1 April. Employers must pay at least these rates for all hours worked. Failure to pay the minimum wage is a criminal offence and can result in a fine of up to £20,000 per worker. Workers can report underpayment to HMRC.
