UC replaced six legacy benefits (income-based JSA, income-related ESA, Income Support, Housing Benefit, Working Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit). Each claimant has a monthly "assessment period" set by their claim start date — for example a claim made on the 10th of a month always assesses 10th to 9th and pays seven days later on the 16th. Northern Ireland pays twice a month by default. While waiting for the first payment, you can request an advance (interest-free repayable over 24 months) or, since 2023, the Discretionary Housing Payment fund for rent shortfalls. UC adjusts monthly to reflect earnings via the Real Time Information feed from HMRC PAYE — earnings above the work allowance (£404/month with housing element, £673/month without) reduce UC by 55 pence per £1. Capital over £6,000 reduces UC (£4.35/month per £250 above), and over £16,000 disqualifies entirely. Standard allowances 2025/26: single under 25 £316.98, single 25+ £400.14, couple both under 25 £497.55, couple 25+ £628.10, plus child element £339.00 (first) / £292.81 (additional).
