The Financial Cost of Caring for an Elderly Parent (2026/27)
Unpaid care for a parent has real costs beyond lost earnings — Carer's Allowance, Attendance Allowance, and the true value of hours given up. What the numbers look like in 2026/27.
The two kinds of cost
Caring for an elderly parent typically creates costs in two very different categories: direct spending (equipment, adaptations, paid respite care, travel to appointments) and opportunity cost (reduced working hours, career progression paused, pension contributions lower). Most people underestimate the second category because it doesn't show up as a bill.

Carer's Allowance
Available to someone providing at least 35 hours a week of care for a person receiving a qualifying disability benefit (such as Attendance Allowance, PIP daily living component, or Disability Living Allowance care component), subject to an earnings limit for the carer. Check gov.uk for the current weekly rate and earnings threshold, as both are periodically uprated.
Carer's Credit
For carers doing at least 20 hours a week who don't meet the Carer's Allowance threshold, Carer's Credit protects the National Insurance record with a Class 3 credit, helping preserve the qualifying years needed for a full new State Pension without requiring any minimum earnings.

Attendance Allowance
Paid to people over State Pension age who need help with personal care or supervision due to a physical or mental disability, at one of two weekly rates depending on whether care is needed by day, by night, or both. It is not means-tested — savings and income don't affect eligibility — and it isn't restricted to being spent on formal care; many families use it flexibly for whatever helps most.

- Care needs assessment: free, not means-tested, assesses what support the person needs (help washing, dressing, meal preparation, mobility).
- Financial assessment (means test): determines how much, if anything, the council contributes toward the cost of meeting those needs — based on income, savings and sometimes property.
Where the council does contribute, Direct Payments can be requested instead of council-arranged care, giving the family control over hiring carers or paying for services directly, which some families find better matches their parent's preferences.
The lost-earnings reality
Reducing hours or leaving a job to provide unpaid care is the largest cost for many carers, and it compounds: lower salary now, a paused pension, and (without Carer's Credit) a State Pension record that may fall short of the qualifying years needed for the full amount. Checking a State Pension forecast before and after a planned reduction in hours helps quantify the real long-term cost, not just the immediate drop in take-home pay.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get paid for caring for a parent?
Carer's Allowance is available if you provide at least 35 hours of care a week for someone receiving a qualifying disability benefit and you earn below the Carer's Allowance earnings limit — check gov.uk for the current weekly rate and earnings threshold.
Does reducing work hours to care for a parent affect my State Pension?
It can, since fewer qualifying years of National Insurance can reduce the eventual new State Pension, but Carer's Credit can fill NI gaps for carers who don't qualify for Carer's Allowance, protecting the record without requiring paid work.
What benefit can help pay for care costs, not just the carer's time?
Attendance Allowance is paid to the person needing care (based on their own care needs, not means-tested on income or savings) and can be put toward paid care, equipment, or simply household costs — it doesn't have to be spent on formal care.
