What is Council Tax Band?
The valuation band (A to H or I) that determines how much Council Tax you pay.
Full Definition
In England and Scotland, every domestic property is assigned a valuation band from A (lowest) to H (highest), based on its value at a fixed date (1 April 1991 in England, 1 April 1991 in Scotland). Wales has 9 bands (A to I) based on 1 April 2003 values. Northern Ireland uses a Domestic Rates system instead. Your local council sets the Band D rate each year; other bands are fixed multiples (e.g. Band A = 6/9 of Band D, Band H = 18/9 of Band D in England). You can challenge your band if you think it's wrong, but be aware: it can go up as well as down.
