What is Remittance Basis Charge?
An annual charge some non-UK domiciled residents historically paid to be taxed only on income brought into the UK.
Full Definition
The remittance basis charge (RBC) was an annual fee that long-term UK resident, non-UK domiciled individuals could pay to continue being taxed only on foreign income and gains they actually brought (remitted) into the UK, rather than on their worldwide income as it arose. The charge scaled with years of UK residence and only applied to those choosing the remittance basis rather than the arising basis. The remittance basis and domicile-based regime were replaced from 6 April 2025 by a new residence-based Foreign Income and Gains (FIG) regime, so this concept is now mainly relevant to historical tax years and transitional rules.
