What is EORI Number?
A unique Economic Operators Registration and Identification number businesses need to move goods into or out of the UK.
Full Definition
An EORI (Economic Operators Registration and Identification) number is a unique identifier required to import or export goods between Great Britain and other countries, and in some cases between Great Britain and Northern Ireland. UK businesses need a number starting with GB; those moving goods to or from Northern Ireland may also need an XI number. You apply free through HMRC on gov.uk, and registration is usually quick. The number is used on customs declarations so HMRC and Border Force can identify the trader and link consignments to the business. Without one, goods can be delayed or held at the border. It is separate from VAT registration, though VAT-registered traders can link the two, and import VAT and customs duty are handled through customs processes rather than the EORI itself. Most small parcel senders using couriers will still need an EORI once they trade goods commercially across the UK border.
