What is Marriage Allowance Backdating?
Claim Marriage Allowance for up to four prior tax years — worth up to ~£1,260 in refunds.
Full Definition
Marriage Allowance lets a non-taxpaying spouse or civil partner transfer £1,260 of their unused Personal Allowance to a basic-rate-taxpaying partner, saving £252 a year. Claims can be backdated up to four tax years if both partners met the eligibility criteria — typically: married/civil-partnered, one earning under £12,570, the other earning between £12,571 and £50,270 (£43,662 in Scotland). Backdating a full four years plus the current year can produce a refund of up to roughly £1,260. Claim free of charge at gov.uk/apply-marriage-allowance — never via paid intermediaries.
