Full Definition
Your National Insurance number (NINO) is a personal reference, formatted like AB123456C, that identifies you in the UK's tax and benefits systems. It's allocated automatically before your 16th birthday if you live in the UK. The number is used by HMRC, DWP, employers and pension providers. You'll need it to start work, claim benefits, apply for Self Assessment, or set up a personal tax account. You can find your NI number on your payslip, P60, or in your HMRC personal tax account at gov.uk.
