What is NLW & NMW (National Living/Minimum Wage)?
UK statutory minimum hourly pay — £12.21 for 21+ from April 2025.
Full Definition
The National Living Wage (NLW) is the UK statutory minimum hourly pay for workers aged 21 and over: £12.21/hour from April 2025 (up from £11.44). National Minimum Wage (NMW) applies to younger workers: 18-20 £10.00/hour (up from £8.60), under-18 £7.55, apprentices (first year or under-19) £7.55. Paid for all working hours including training and travel between sites (not commute home). Annual salary at NLW for 37.5-hour week ≈ £23,810. Employers must pay at least these rates; HMRC enforces with up to £20,000 fines per underpaid worker. Real Living Wage (voluntary, set by Living Wage Foundation) is higher: £12.60/hr UK, £13.85/hr London 2025.
