What is Passported Benefits?
Additional help -- such as free prescriptions, free school meals or a Warm Home Discount -- that a household becomes automatically entitled to because they already receive a qualifying benefit.

Passported benefits are additional forms of financial help or free services that a household becomes automatically or more easily entitled to purely because they already receive a specified "qualifying" benefit, rather than needing to satisfy a completely separate means test from scratch for each additional form of help. Common examples in the UK include free school meals eligibility for children in households receiving Universal Credit with income below a set threshold or certain legacy benefits, automatic qualification for the Warm Home Discount for some Pension Credit recipients, free NHS prescriptions and dental treatment for people receiving Universal Credit with low earnings or certain other benefits, and easier access to a Council Tax Reduction or the Household Support Fund for those already receiving a qualifying means-tested benefit. Because passported benefits are triggered by already receiving a specific qualifying benefit, moving between benefits -- for example, being migrated from an older legacy benefit onto Universal Credit -- can sometimes change which passported benefits a household is entitled to, occasionally creating a gap or a loss of automatic entitlement to something like free school meals if the new benefit does not carry the same automatic passporting rules as the old one, which is one of the reasons benefit advice services encourage households going through a change in benefit type to check what passported entitlements might be affected. Because the rules for what triggers a specific passported benefit can vary by benefit, by nation (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland sometimes differ), and can change from year to year, households are generally advised to check current passporting rules for a specific entitlement via gov.uk or their local authority rather than assuming a previous passported benefit still applies automatically after a change in circumstances.
