What is Probate?
Legal authority to administer a deceased person's estate in England, Wales and NI.

Probate (formally «Grant of Probate» if there's a will, «Letters of Administration» if intestate) is the court-issued document giving executors or administrators the legal right to access and distribute a deceased person's assets. Required if the estate exceeds £5,000-£50,000 (bank threshold varies) or includes property. Application fee £300 for estates over £5,000. Process takes 8-16 weeks typically. In Scotland the equivalent is «Confirmation» via Sheriff Court. IHT (if any) usually must be paid before probate is granted.
