What is Severe Disability Premium?
An extra amount within legacy benefits for severely disabled people living alone, now closed to new Universal Credit claims.

The Severe Disability Premium (SDP) was an additional amount paid within legacy means-tested benefits (such as Income Support, income-based JSA/ESA, and Housing Benefit) to claimants who received a qualifying disability benefit, lived alone (or only with others who don't count), and had no one paid Carer's Allowance for looking after them. It does not exist within Universal Credit, so claimants receiving SDP are generally protected from being moved onto Universal Credit until managed migration, or receive transitional protection payments if they do move, to compensate for the loss.
