What is UTR Number?
A 10-digit Unique Taxpayer Reference issued by HMRC for Self Assessment.
Full Definition
Your UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference) is a 10-digit number issued by HMRC when you register for Self Assessment. You'll receive it within 10 working days of registering (longer if you're overseas). You need your UTR to file Self Assessment returns, set up payments, or contact HMRC about your tax. Your UTR appears on Self Assessment statements, payment reminders, and your HMRC online account. Keep it confidential — it can be used in identity theft.
