How do I pay my Self Assessment tax bill online?
You can pay your Self Assessment tax bill online via HMRC website using bank transfer, debit card, or Direct Debit. Payment is due by 31 January following the tax year.
Full answer
HMRC accepts Self Assessment payments through several online methods: same-day Faster Payments or CHAPS bank transfer, debit card (not credit card), or setting up a Direct Debit. You will need your 10-digit Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) as the payment reference. For the 2025/26 tax year, the payment deadline is 31 January 2027 for the balancing payment and any first payment on account. A second payment on account is due by 31 July 2027. If you cannot pay in full, you may be able to set up a Time to Pay arrangement with HMRC online if you owe less than £30,000.
