How do I register as self-employed with HMRC?
You must register as self-employed with HMRC by 5 October following the end of the tax year in which you started trading. Register online at gov.uk using your Government Gateway account.
Full answer
To register as self-employed, go to the HMRC website and use the Register for Self Assessment service with your Government Gateway user ID. You will need your National Insurance number and details of your business. If you started self-employment in the 2025/26 tax year (ending 5 April 2026), you must register by 5 October 2026 to avoid penalties. Once registered, you will receive a Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) number and be required to file a Self Assessment tax return each year. You must also register for Class 2 and Class 4 NI contributions. If your taxable turnover exceeds the VAT threshold of £90,000, you must also register for VAT within 30 days.
