How long does HMRC take to refund overpaid tax?
HMRC typically processes online tax refund claims in 5 to 8 weeks, with the money paid by BACS to your bank or by cheque. Self Assessment refunds usually arrive within 2 to 4 weeks once the return is filed. P800 end-of-year refunds may be issued automatically by cheque after 6 to 8 weeks.
Full answer
There are three main routes for an HMRC refund. (1) P800 letter: HMRC reviews PAYE after each tax year ends in April; if you overpaid, you receive a P800 calculation between June and November. Claim online via your Personal Tax Account for a BACS refund in 5 working days, or wait around 6 weeks for an automatic cheque. (2) Self Assessment: file your return and HMRC processes the repayment in 2 to 4 weeks, sometimes longer if it triggers a security check. (3) In-year refund via an R40 (interest) or P50 (stopped work): usually 6 to 8 weeks. Delays are common during peak periods (January, July). Always claim refunds yourself through gov.uk rather than via third-party "tax refund agents", who can take 30%+ of your money for free admin. Never share your Government Gateway credentials.
