How do I check if my tax code is correct with HMRC?
Check your tax code at gov.uk/check-income-tax, via the HMRC app, on your latest payslip, or by calling 0300 200 3300. The standard 2026/27 code for one job with no adjustments is 1257L. If you have multiple jobs, benefits in kind, or underpaid tax, your code will differ.
Full answer
How to check and correct your UK tax code in 2026/27. Method 1 — Personal Tax Account (fastest): sign in at gov.uk/personal-tax-account and navigate to 'Pay As You Earn'. You'll see your current tax code and a breakdown of what it includes — Personal Allowance adjustments, company benefits, underpaid tax from prior years, etc. You can also update HMRC about changes directly online. Method 2 — HMRC app: download the free HMRC app, sign in, and view your tax code under the PAYE section. Method 3 — payslip: your tax code appears on every payslip (look for 'Tax Code' or 'TC'). Method 4 — P60 or PAYE notice: HMRC sends a 'Coding Notice' (P2) when your tax code changes — check the post in early spring each year. Method 5 — phone: call HMRC Income Tax helpline on 0300 200 3300 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm). Standard tax code 2026/27: 1257L. This means a Personal Allowance of £12,570 (the 1257 represents £12,570 / 10 = 1257) with the standard personal allowance (L suffix). Common reasons your code might differ: company car or private medical benefit in kind (reduces allowance), underpaid tax from a previous year (reduces allowance), Marriage Allowance received (adds 1,260 = code 1383L), second job (BR code), HMRC pending a review (T suffix). If your code is wrong, HMRC will adjust it and refund or collect the difference -- but you can speed this up by contacting them.
