The Home Insurance Loyalty Penalty: Auto-Renewal vs Shopping Around (2026)
Staying with the same home insurer year after year often costs more, not less. What the FCA's pricing rules changed, and a worked comparison of auto-renewal versus switching.
What the loyalty penalty actually was
Before the FCA's 2022 reforms, it was well documented that insurers often used price walking β gradually raising a loyal customer's renewal premium each year, on the assumption that inertia (auto-renewal, the hassle of switching) meant many customers simply wouldn't notice or wouldn't act. New customers, by contrast, were regularly quoted lower "new business" prices for identical risk.
What actually changed
Since January 2022, general insurance pricing rules require insurers to offer existing customers renewing a policy a price no higher than a new customer would pay for the equivalent risk through the same sales channel (e.g. the same price comparison site or direct channel). This closed the specific loyalty-penalty mechanism but did not create a market where every insurer prices identically β different insurers still assess and price risk differently, and a competitor may genuinely be cheaper for the same customer.

Even with price walking banned, three things still make an annual check worthwhile:
- Different insurers weigh risk factors differently β postcode, claims history, security features, and even quirks of underwriting models mean quotes for identical cover can vary significantly between providers.
- Introductory discounts for new customers are still legal and common β they're simply no longer combined with an artificially inflated renewal price at the same insurer.
- Cover can quietly change at renewal β a rebuild sum insured, an added exclusion, or a raised excess can happen without the headline price changing much, so a side-by-side comparison of terms (not just price) is worth doing regardless.
A simple annual routine
- Get the renewal quote roughly 3-4 weeks before the renewal date.
- Run a comparison across at least two independent sources (a comparison site and a direct quote or two), matching cover levels exactly.
- Call the existing insurer with the best alternative quote β many will match or beat it rather than lose the customer, particularly now that they can't simply raise the price at will.
- Cancel in good time if switching, checking for any short cancellation fee in the existing policy's terms.

Auto-renewal isn't inherently a bad choice if the existing insurer's price is genuinely competitive β the FCA reforms mean it's no longer automatically a bad one either. But treating renewal as a moment to actively compare, rather than a default to accept, remains the more reliable way to avoid overpaying, price-walking ban or not.

Frequently asked questions
Is it true that loyal home insurance customers used to pay more?
Yes β before 2022, long-standing customers who never switched were frequently quoted higher renewal prices than new customers for the same risk, a practice known as the loyalty penalty or 'price walking'.
What changed with FCA pricing rules?
Since January 2022, the FCA requires insurers to offer existing customers a renewal price no higher than they'd offer an equivalent new customer through the same sales channel β this ended price walking, but it doesn't mean auto-renewal is now automatically the cheapest option overall, since a different insurer may still price the same risk lower.
Does shopping around every year still make sense?
Often yes β even with price-walking banned, different insurers price risk differently, and comparison sites can reveal a materially cheaper equivalent policy elsewhere, so an annual check before auto-renewal remains a sensible habit.
