What is BACS?
The UK's automated clearing system used for salary payments, standing orders and Direct Debits, taking up to three working days to clear.
Full Definition
BACS (Bankers' Automated Clearing Services) is the electronic payment system that processes the vast majority of the UK's regular, non-urgent bank transfers, including salary and pension payments, standing orders, and Direct Debit collections. A BACS payment runs on a three-day cycle: it is submitted on day one, processed and validated on day two, and the funds clear into the recipient's account on day three, which is why employers typically initiate payroll two or three working days before payday to make sure wages land on time. Because BACS is designed for high-volume, low-cost bulk processing rather than speed, it is not used for one-off transfers where a customer needs money to move the same day -- that role is filled instead by Faster Payments for smaller ad hoc transfers or CHAPS for large, time-critical payments such as a house purchase completion. BACS also underpins the Direct Debit Guarantee scheme, since every Direct Debit collected from a UK bank account is processed through the BACS network, giving payers the same statutory protection regardless of which bank or biller is involved.
