What is Direct Debit Guarantee?
A UK banking safeguard that entitles customers to an immediate, no-questions-asked refund from their bank if a Direct Debit is taken incorrectly.
Full Definition
The Direct Debit Guarantee is a scheme, backed by every UK bank and building society that offers Direct Debits, which protects customers if a payment is taken in error -- for example, the wrong amount is collected, a payment is taken on the wrong date, or a Direct Debit continues after it should have been cancelled. Under the guarantee, the customer's own bank must refund the incorrect amount immediately, in full, on the day the customer requests it, without needing to contact the organisation that collected the payment first or prove that a mistake was made; the bank then resolves the dispute with the biller separately. The guarantee also requires organisations to give advance notice before collecting a Direct Debit for the first time or changing the amount or date, and customers can cancel a Direct Debit at any time by contacting their bank directly, even if they have not yet told the organisation collecting it. Because the protection sits with the bank rather than the biller, and because it applies automatically to every Direct Debit without the customer needing to opt in, the Direct Debit Guarantee is one of the strongest consumer payment protections in UK banking, and is a key reason Direct Debit is generally considered safer for recurring bills than giving a company a card number to charge repeatedly.
