What is Bereavement Support Payment?
DWP benefit for surviving spouse/partner under State Pension age — up to £9,800.
Full Definition
Bereavement Support Payment (BSP) is a tax-free, non-means-tested DWP benefit for people whose spouse, civil partner or (since 2023) cohabiting partner died, paid in addition to inheritance. Higher rate (with dependent children): £3,500 lump sum + £350/month for 18 months = £9,800 total. Standard rate (no children): £2,500 lump sum + £100/month for 18 months = £4,300 total. Must claim within 3 months for full backdating. Replaced older Bereavement Allowance and Widowed Parent's Allowance from April 2017.
