UK 2026/27 tax year · Updated 2026-06-10
UK haulage and logistics — HGV operators, courier and parcel firms, owner-drivers, warehousing and fleet businesses — lives or dies on fuel and running costs. Diesel is the single largest variable expense, so MPG, pence-per-mile and fuel-cost maths feed directly into quotes and margins, and VAT-registered hauliers reclaim input VAT on fuel, AdBlue, tyres and repairs. Operators running goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes need an operator's licence and face HGV-specific Vehicle Excise Duty bands by weight and axle. The long-running HGV driver shortage has pushed up wages and made retention a priority. Many drivers and couriers are self-employed or work through limited companies, so IR35 status, allowable expenses and the 45p/25p AMAP mileage rates matter; the gig economy has blurred employment status for app-based couriers. Note the Construction Industry Scheme does not apply to haulage. These calculators help drivers, owner-operators and logistics firms work out fuel costs, mileage, VAT, road tax and net pay.
