Full answer
Child Benefit rates for 2026/27 are £25.60 per week for the eldest or only child (£1,331.20 per year) and £16.95 per week for each additional child (£881.40 per year). There is no limit on the number of children you can claim for. The High Income Child Benefit Charge (HICBC) gradually claws back the benefit when either parent's adjusted net income exceeds £60,000. It is clawed back at 1% of benefit per £200 of income above £60,000, and is fully withdrawn at £80,000. Between those thresholds, 50% of Child Benefit is effectively taxed for a basic-rate payer — making pension contributions valuable in this band. Families where both parents earn just under £60,000 can both retain full Child Benefit, while a single-income family earning over £80,000 receives nothing. Claim via the HMRC Child Benefit online service. Use the Child Benefit calculator to estimate your entitlement and any HICBC.
