Council Tax Support (sometimes called Council Tax Reduction) is the means-tested scheme run by local councils in England and Wales to reduce council tax bills for residents on a low income, having replaced the national Council Tax Benefit. Each council designs its own scheme within broad government rules, so eligibility, the maximum reduction available and how savings and income are assessed can vary significantly between local authorities — pensioners are protected by a national minimum scheme, but working-age rules are set locally.
