Find out what a sum of money from the past is worth in today's money, or how much prices have risen over time using UK CPI data.
Based on UK CPI (Consumer Price Index) annual averages from ONS. Data covers 1990–2025.
Pick the start year
Choose the year your original amount is from. CPI data is available back to 1988; for earlier years the calculator uses ONS composite CPI estimates built from historical price indices.
Enter the amount
Input the value in pounds. The calculator works for any sum from pennies to millions and treats all amounts in nominal (cash) terms.
Pick the end year
Select the year you want to compare against (defaults to today). The calculator uses the December CPI for past years and the latest available month for the current year.
Review the result
See the equivalent purchasing power, the cumulative inflation rate, the average annual rate over the period, and a chart of CPI growth between the two dates.
Apply it to your finances
Use the result to set realistic savings, pension and investment growth targets. To preserve purchasing power, post-tax returns must at least match the inflation rate.
