The UK officially uses metric units for most legal and scientific purposes but retains imperial in everyday life — a mix that catches out residents, expats and visitors alike. Our Unit Converter handles length, weight, volume, temperature, area, speed and energy in both systems, with shortcut conversions specifically tuned to UK customs: stones and pounds for body weight, miles and yards for distance, imperial pints for beer and milk, imperial gallons for fuel economy. Useful UK-specific conversions built in include: 1 stone = 6.35 kg = 14 pounds (body weight); 1 UK (imperial) pint = 568 ml (versus 473 ml in the US) — so 1 pint of beer or milk is over 20% larger than its American equivalent; 1 UK gallon = 4.546 litres (versus 3.785 litres US) — important when comparing US-quoted MPG figures with UK fuel economy; 1 mile = 1.609 km; speed limits in mph (30/40/50/60/70); and oven temperatures in °C (UK standard) or gas marks (gas mark 4 = 180°C = 350°F). The Weights and Measures Act sets legal trading units in the UK. Loose food must be priced and sold by weight in grams or kilograms (with optional imperial as supplementary information), but draught beer, cider and milk in returnable bottles must be sold in pints or fractions of a pint. Petrol and diesel are sold in litres, but vehicle fuel economy is quoted in MPG using the imperial gallon. Road signs use miles, yards and feet — Highway Code distances are imperial — while Ordnance Survey maps use metres and kilometres. Property listings often quote floor area in both square metres and square feet; the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) recommends metric for new measurements. Cooking is where UK households navigate the most unit-juggling. Modern recipes are predominantly metric (g, ml, °C), but older cookbooks and many baking recipes still use ounces, fluid ounces and °F.
