Confirm continuous service
Check you reached 26 weeks of service by the end of the 15th week before the expected week of childbirth.
Calculate average weekly earnings
Add gross pay in the 8 weeks ending with the qualifying week and divide by 8. Your average must be at least £125/week.
Apply the lower of £187.18 or 90%
SPP is paid at £187.18/week or 90% of your average — whichever is less.
Choose 1 or 2 weeks of leave
Take one or two weeks within 52 weeks of birth. Since April 2024 the two weeks can be split apart.
Notify your employer
Give written notice (form SC3) by the end of the 15th week before the expected week of childbirth.
Add any enhanced employer pay
Check your contract or staff handbook for occupational paternity pay — many employers top up SPP to full pay.
