Confirm eligibility
Check employee status, £125+ average weekly earnings, and at least 4 consecutive days of sickness including non-working days.

These are your normal working days. SSP is paid only for sickness on qualifying days, after 3 waiting days.

Subtract 3 waiting days from your total sick days to get the number of paid SSP days.
Apply the £118.75 weekly rate
SSP pays £118.75/week (2025/26) pro-rata across qualifying days in the week.
Add any contractual top-up
Check your contract for occupational sick pay — many employers pay full salary for an initial period.
Plan for the 28-week limit
SSP stops after 28 weeks per period of incapacity. Apply for ESA or Universal Credit before SSP ends.
